Intro To Drone for DEBCON 1

“Dazzle Fox” by Andrew Sempere

My pal Deb, who you may remember from running the Zed Equals Zee music/tech blog, or the current Daily Idioms thing, decided to throw a conference for her birthday (and called it DEBCON 1), letting all of her multi-talented friends give short talks about an insanely wide variety of topics. So, I’ll be talking about drone, obviously. That’s where this mix came from.

Deb also asked me to put together some drone to play at DEBCON, and I figured this would be a good opportunity to do a chronology of sorts of the genre starting with its introduction to the Western contemporary music world in the ’60s up to the current crop of bad dudes. So here’s the background on this mix. I tried to go for more drone than ambient, and I generally opted for longer songs. I tried to go with “classics” but since you can’t really have a new classic, the later years are more of my favorite well known(ish) stuff. I tried to keep the spacing more or less equal between the decades and was pleased with a nice round number of 20 songs. I included the year of composition or recording when possible but otherwise the year is the release date of the record. I did some equalizing of the tracks but since it’s almost 7 hours (1GB) of drone, I didn’t have time to listen to the whole thing again afterwards, so please let me know if there’s any crazy shit going on volume-wise (side note: Radigue’s piece is on the low side, but it’s maxed out with no clipping so just dig deep and zone in).

Thanks and enjoy.

Black (Metal) Mixmas IV

black metal mixmas iv album cover

In a year where extreme metal sub-genres coalesced into a homogenized pile of badass, black metal stood its ground like a bleak beacon, giving us some of the truest & weirdest records the genre has seen in a while. This mix takes tracks from my favorite black metal records that came out this year (two, Mare & Dressed In Streams, compiled tracks from previous now-unavailable releases). Last year’s Volume III was a 3 parter, so it only made sense to make Volume IV a 4 parter, each the appropriate length of a mix to burn onto a CD if you so desire.

Each part has been vaguely divided into traditional raw (parts 1 & 2), post (part 3), and experimental (part 4). And I thought that since there’s a ton of songs here (54!) and that one of my favorite records didn’t make this mix because the tracks were too long, I’d give you an actual Top Black Metal list. I wrote about most, but not all of these records. I linked to the reviews when applicable.

So here’s my favorite 2013 black metal records and a 4 hour 22 minute mix of the raddest heaviness you’ll hear this year. It should keep you company during this overly joyful season. I’ll see you next year.

Every Choice Is A Death

The fine folks at Workin’ Nights flattered me by asking me to make a mix for their site. I obliged with some old & new folk & blues about death & dying. It includes Giles Corey, Nimrod Workman, Michael Hurley, Mount Eerie, and Robert Johnson. I think you’ll like it.

Black (Metal) Mixmas III

This is the third installment of Black (Metal) Mixmas. The “Metal” is in parentheses because I hoped to make the Black Mixmas/Black Christmas pun a tad more obvious and because this isn’t entirely black metal. There’s some black doom, black noise, black ambient, etc. But it’s primarily black metal so don’t lose your shit if you’re a purist.

Speaking of which, this here’s a three parter, and each part has its own aesthetic. Part I starts off with your more straightforward black metal. It’s still raw and brootal and super awesome, just not too many bells & whistles. Part II gets a bit more melodic and moves towards some of that shoegazey post-etc stuff. Part III (my personal favorite) gets totally fucked up and brings in the twisted shit, extra raw, extra noisy, extra extraordinary. Each part stands on its own as a killer mix but back to back to back they make the biggest most badass black metal adventure you’ve ever been on.

As with everything else on this site, I tend to give priority to the under-represented and pass over the more high profile bands. That means as amazing as Ash Borer and Panopticon are, they don’t need to be here. But tons of awesome blackened shit came out this year that wasn’t on Profound Lore and in fact is available for free/name your price downloads on Bandcamp. I linked to all the ones I knew about but dig around and you might find some more. Also, everything on this mix (except Esequiem’s track) came out in 2012, so consider this the unofficial AGB Best Of Black Metal list.

I’m taking an AGB vacation for the holidays starting now. If I’m not back before the new year, I’ll be back after the new year. These 3+ hours of depravity should keep you sane until then.

Minimix: Technovember

In response to those of your asking for a regular roundup of shit I’ve been listening to and digging but not reviewing, I’m starting a regular roundup of shit I’ve been listening to and digging. They’ll be short minimixes with little commentary and maybe occasionally cohesive in some way. I’ll be playing with the delivery, so please let me know what you do/don’t like. Do you want everything zipped or single track downloads? Do you want one long stream or individual streams? Just gimme some feedback.

This time around I threw together some techno/anti-techno/ambient techno/technoise tracks that are pretty fucking sweet. I know 8 songs isn’t exactly mini but I doubt it’ll usually be this robust. Anyway, have at it, and hopefully you’ll grace your ears with some new hotness.

You’re Too Kind

Here it is, the official “thank you for being so fucking awesome” fundraiser mix. Donators got this one early, but now I share it with the rest of the world. This is mostly new stuff. In fact, with the exception of the opener, I think every track came out within the past year or so. There’s a decent variety of styles, but nothing too out of the ordinary. I hope it’s everything you wished for in a new AGB mix.

Funeral Hymn

source: Pflügen by Hugo Henneberg

This mix serves two purposes. I’m attending a funeral, so I’ll be afAGB for a few days. This should keep you occupied until I return. Also, we can consider this technically the first mix as part of the fundraising rewards mix series, but not the official “fundraising award” mix, so if you donated, don’t worry that you didn’t get this before everyone else. This is the first doom mix I’ve made, and since I’ve been really into Pallbearer’s Sorrow And Extinction and since I’ll be a pallbearer at the service, I thought it would be appropriate to include something off of it, but they just didn’t fit the feel. Instead, this is over an hour of black doom, deathdoom, funeral doom (obviously), all things crushing, depressing, and destructive. Enjoy the weekend.

A couple of my friends and I started a mix trading project. The idea (not mine, sadly) is to take a track number and make a mix using only songs that are that track number on their respective albums. Hence the title 3. My inspiration was A Faulty Chromosome’s “Groaning Like A Grown-Up” (third track off of Craving To Be Coddle So We Feel Fake-Safe) which is one of my favorite songs ever. I even wrote about that song specifically after I had already reviewed the album. It’s just so fucking good. Anyway, this mix starts out kinda poppy, ends up pretty noisy. I had fun making it, so I thought I’d share. Enjoy.

Black (Metal) Mixmas II

“Merry Mixmas” cards by the second best Gocco-er: Heather Jeany

I made a black metal mix in ’09 for my holiday AGB break, skipped over it last year in lieu of this wacky music box album, and am reviving it in 2011 for perhaps an annual thing? We’ll see. I thought it would be appropriate this year because I seem to be surrounded by death & abandonment.

I’ll be gone for a little while, as has been the case lately. Lots of family time due to having less family. So I’m leaving Black (Metal) Mixmas II in my stead. I decided to select songs that only came out in 2011 for this. So it kinda doubles as a year end best black metal list for me, but not entirely. This should be a hit with you & your loved ones. Make sure you share it with everyone. Play it while the little one in your life has woken you up at some ungodly hour and you’re enjoying your spiked coffee. Unwrapping presents before sunrise is what black metal was made for.

Too much sadness. The last time I posted was after my father in law had fallen, broken his neck, and was in a coma. It was a mix of the most beautiful music, what I hoped being in a coma sounded like. Without going into too many details, he passed away after fighting for a week and a half. The memorial service is tomorrow, so I made another mix, one full of heartache.

The worst part is that I had to make a new one. I posted a funeral mix once, then I reposted it when there was another funeral a few months ago, and I thought better of triple dipping. This is a much better mix than that first one anyways. And it finally allowed me to do something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time: put Giles Corey alongside Jakob Battick. They sound absolutely perfect together.

My father in law is in a coma. He fell and broke his neck. So what I normally do in times such as these is make a mix (dual purpose: for myself, for AGB). He’s hardly responsive at all, but there is a little glimmer every now and then, opening an eye, moving a foot, etc. I thought about what it must be like to be in a coma and hoped it sounded like this mix. Complete and utter bliss. The most beautiful music I can think of. I hope this is what it’s like for him right now.

I don’t know if I’ll be too pre-occupied to blog for a little bit or if I’ll be writing up a storm to keep my mind off things, but either way I don’t buy cialis canada online imagine any posts until at least after Thanksgiving. I hope this 82 minute mix will keep you company until I return.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE. I got a real top notch job. Gonna be an archivist at Simmons College. See, I’m in the graduate program at Simmons for archiving and they hired me for a full time position to archive shit and manage the student workers. There’s so many reasons this job is the best fucking thing ever, like regular hours, holidays off, benefits, tuition reduction…

Also, I’m done with my old job at CinemaSalem and have some time off between now and when I start at Simmons, so I’m taking a little MUCH needed vacation. And you know I like to post mixes before I go do my thing. This one’s called HOTSHOT ’cause that’s me baby. BAM.

Part of what I’m going to do on this vacation is figure out how Anti-Gravity Bunny needs to change in order for me to continue blogging. Basically, since I’ll be working the 9-5 deal with a long commute, AGB can’t be the same, I’m just not sure what I need to do to still make it work. But fear not, loyal nerds, I’ll come back with a genius plan and all will be well. Now…
