Top 15 Drone Records Of 2018

I was putting together my list of favorite drone records from this year and noticed a theme: a lot of them were made by women. So I decided to take out the dudes and make a list of just lady droners. But when I started working on that list, I realized I was leaving out a lot of my favorites because they weren’t capital-D Drone records. So I said fuck it, I’m just going to make a list of my favorite drone records made by female artists even if they’re just kind of drone, or droney, or droning, or whatever. So while this is my least Drone year end drone list, it makes up for it by 1: being more true to what I like, 2: highlighting under-represented artists, and 3: still churning out a fuck ton of drone.

Once again, I tried to shy away from the high profile artists (which, sadly, there aren’t nearly enough of in this niche). There were really only three that probably would’ve been on my list if I felt they didn’t need my extra support: Sarah Davachi, Olivia Block, and Mountain Man. So if you somehow missed any of those, definitely scope them out asap. And Phew’s Voice Hardcore was on the list until I found out the CD version came out in 2017 even though the vinyl and digital editions came out this year. Oops. That’s another crazy one that you should check out.

There are two drone records, though, that were made by dudes and I feel were not given nearly enough attention, and were definitely Top 5 material for me, so I would feel remiss if I didn’t mention the wholly unique blissful doom drone by A Story Of Rats (featuring Garek Druss of Dull Knife) and the debut collaboration between High Aura’d & Asama (aka Thommy Saraceno of Owlfood). Those two records are fucking phenomenal and deserve your dollars.

I made a Spotify playlist again, because even though I hate Spotify, some people rely on it, so here you go. It’s missing songs from numbers 12, 13, and 14 because they’re not on Spotify, so make sure to stream those below.

As always: Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening. Thanks for making incredible music.

See what made the cut after the jump.

Top 15 Drone Records Of 2017

I feel like I missed a lot of drone records this year, especially after seeing other people’s lists. Like, there’s 4 records on A Closer Listen’s Top Ten Drone list that I haven’t heard yet. Oh well. Can’t listen to everything.

I’m especially happy with this list because not only does it have a lot of artists I’ve never heard of/written about before (15, 10, 4, 3) but also it has a lot of artists who I already love that are at the top of their game right now (14, 13, 7, 1). As usual, I tried to stay away from the high profile droners (yes, Lawrence English’s Cruel Optimism and Bibio’s Phantom Brickworks are phenomenal) and I do my best to let you know about my less-obvious favorites.

In case you missed em, you should check out my other lists: Metal and Not Drone Or Metal. There’s plenty of droney shit on the Not Drone Or Metal list, too, so you’ll definitely want to go there. The #1 on that list is an All Time Top 10er that I doubt will ever get unseated.

Here’s the Spotify playlist for those of you who like that sort of thing. It’s missing numbers 10, 8, 6, and 4, so stream those below.

As always: Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening. Thanks for making incredible music.

Top 16 Metal Records Of 2017

I tried my best to keep this list to a round number, like an increment of 5, but I just couldn’t help it. There are 16 records that I needed to tell you about and I couldn’t cut a single one from the list.

There’s way more doom/sludge than I expected, and while I tried to branch out from the big labels, I couldn’t help it too much, so save for the couple self released ones, there’s not a lot of surprises on here. Doesn’t matter, though. IT’S ALL AWESOME.

Since the previous list (Top 10 (Not Drone Or Metal) Records) didn’t have embedded streams, I made a Spotify playlist due to popular demand. But when I went to make a playlist for this list, it was missing numbers 16, 12, 10, 4, & 3, because Spotify sucks and that was too many. So while I still made the playlist, I also embedded a streaming song for everything on this list. I also went back and did the same for the previous list.

As always: Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening. Thanks for making incredible music.

Top 10 (Not Drone Or Metal) Records Of 2017

Here’s the first of three lists. In case you couldn’t tell by the title, the other two lists will be a drone list and a metal list. This one has records that don’t fit in either of those lists. However, I could’ve argued for maybe half of these showing up on the drone list, but I tried not to get too loosey goosey with my definition of drone.

There’s a ton of debuts here (6 to be exact) which is really exciting. Here’s hoping they continue their genius. The reviews/descriptions are pretty short on these and will be the same on the other lists because I just don’t have enough time to write 30+ full reviews. Imagine they’re just taglines or something.

Instead of uploading a song to stream for every record, I made a playlist on Spotify. I’m not crazy about Spotify for a lot of reasons, but in this context, it falls short because two of the artists on this list aren’t on Spotify (numbers 9 and 4), so you’ll just have to seek those out for yourself.

Update: I added song streams for everything below because I ended up doing it for the metal list and felt weird if I didn’t do it for all the lists.

As always: Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening. Thanks for making incredible music.
