Questions For Danny Paul Grody

Danny Paul Grody by Margo Moritz

credit: Margo Moritz

Thee Danny Paul Grody has a new solo record called Other States as part of the Sketch For Winter series, out on Geographic North right now and it’s fucking incredible (stream it, buy it), it’s the first he’s put out since 2013’s Between Two Worlds on Three Lobed which was the fucking bessssst, Danny’s been doing killer shit with guitars & synths for like 15 years with Tarentel, The Drift, and his own solo work, and all of it is A+++ magic music, his solo stuff sounding like it would’ve been perfectly at home on Takoma, right between Craig Leon and Robbie Basho. I’ve been anticipating this one for a while, so once I heard it was in the works, I jumped at the chance to throw my set of questions at him. He obliged, and I am very thankful. Turns out he and I have a lot in common.

What is the best way to die?
Without pain, regrets and surrounded by loved ones. Sounds romantic, I know, but if I had a choice in the matter…

How do you think you’ll die?
Unexpectedly, I hope.

What makes you happy?
Being loved and loving back. I think happiness is fleeting at best. Once you can accept that, it becomes easier to receive it as well as to let it go when it passes. Maybe fulfillment is a more realistic goal to set?

How can you die happy?
Being fulfilled and doing what you love.

How close have you come to death?
Not very, but I’ve seen life leave a person. HEAVY.

What does kindness mean to you?
Generosity without expectation. The ability to listen, to be vulnerable, and to keep an open heart.

Where do you find love?
From my my parter of ten 10+ years, my friends, family, cat Eli, music and community.

When were you most afraid?
I’ve had some nightmares… I’ll leave it at that.

How do you listen to music?
I’ve got a long commute to work so I listen often on the train or bus these days. I’m also a student so music has been a great writing companion.

CONTEST WINNER: Gates’ Palace Of Mirrors

gates logo

Got lots of great submissions (thank you!!) to win a vinyl copy of Palace Of Mirrors by Gates, but only one hit it out of the park. Revel in Bronson Wistuk’s haiku winning prowess.

Tundra caving in
No fire, no light, smoke billows
Windows kept open

There was another that definitely deserves runner-up status, which is Christian Molenaar’s that follows the 5-7-5 pattern in both English and Japanese, which I kind of just have to take his word on, but whatever, it’s also just a fucking great haiku.

最終しぐれ (Saishū shigure)
冬の雨, 不老 (Fuyu no ame, furō)
バニー土産 (Bunny miyage)

The last cold shower
The rain in winter, ageless
A gift from Bunny

CONTEST: Win Gates’ Palace Of Mirrors

gates - palace of mirrors contest

See that up there? That could be yours. Palace Of Mirrors by Gates on sweet sweet purple mist vinyl, limited to 100 copies, fresh off the press. This monolith was my sixth favorite metal record of 2015, although it almost made it onto the drone list instead of the metal list, because that’s how Gates rolls. This record is out-fucking-standing. Mega droned doom of the highest order. Stream the whole thing here if you want a taste.

So here’s what you need to do if you want to win this thing. Write a haiku, preferably inspired in some way by Gates, or Palace Of Mirrors, or doom drone, or something, you get the idea. Send that haiku to palaceofhaikus [at] antigravitybunny [dotcom] before the end of next Friday (March 11). That’s it. Have fun.

In case you don’t win, here’s a link to buy a copy for yourself, which you should absolutely do.

Also, to preempt any grammar jerks, I’m well aware the plural of haiku doesn’t have an “s” but it just worked better that way for hopefully obvious reasons.
